  1. What is GAD?

The ultimate aim of the GAD Active Demand Side Management Project is to optimise electrical energy consumption and the costs associated, while meeting consumer needs and maintaining quality standards.

Implementing this project will generate the knowledge necessary to standardise different consumption patterns and provide users and final consumption items with signs that would allow them to freely decide based on prices, energy source, environmental impact, etc, in the case of the former, and to stand at the most appropriate level of consumption -providing user consent- in the case of the latter.

Furthermore, the new management mechanisms will require the corresponding network automation, which may result in an improvement of the quality of the electrical supply.

  2. Who benefits from GAD?

First of all, GAD benefits the end user. GAD means a reduction in my monthly electrical invoice, avoiding great consumptions in the hours when the price of the energy is higher, and allows a bigger management of the appliances in order to program and adapt them to the users’ needs.

Secondly, GAD benefits Distribution Companies, due to the fact that they could adjust the users’ energy consumption according to the network needs and avoiding peaks demand periods and distributing the demand to peak-off periods.

By other hand, GAD will adjust the end users’ energy consumption to periods when Renewable Sources are working.

Consequently, GAD benefits the environment avoiding the emission of greenhouse gases thanks to the reduction from some energy resources generation in peaks periods and thanks to the decrease in the new energy infrastructure needed.

  3. What does demand side management do for my everyday life?

In my household the Active Demand Side Management Project means a reduction in my monthly energy invoice, avoiding great consumptions in the hours when the price of the energy is higher than the rest ones and without losing my comfort in my everyday life.

  4. How does my consumption (demand) affect distribution company’s services?

The Distribution System Companies are in charged to supply the energy to millions of consumers. The knowledge about the habits and energy consumption from their consumers allow to the Distribution Company to make a better planning and improve the quality of supply to the end user.

Consumption in my home with the GAD technology allows Distribution companies to plan my energy demand in the most suitable way for me.

  5. How does my consumption affect the environment?

Depending on the origin of the energy, CO2 emissions from power plants can vary. Technologies based on fossil fuels give out greenhouse gases, the opposite to renewable energies (i.e. wind power energy or photovoltaic energy) that do not emit any kind of these gases.

If I am able to switch my apliances on when the generation provides from Renewable energy power plants, the effect from my consumption in the environment is reduced considerably and we will be able to reduce the greenhouses gases emissions and so we will reduce the press over the environment.

  6. How does my consumption affect the price of electricity?

The energy price matches up with the market settlement price between offers and supply bids. This settlement is carried out hourly every day. The bigger the demand is, the more expensive the price is.

If consumers’ consumption can be distributed during the day thanks to GAD technology in the houses, peaks demands will decrease and so, energy price will also decrease due to the demand will have been reduced.

  7. How can I modify my profile of consumption without important variations in my habits?

With GAD Technology, the energy controller makes the use and start of the appliances easy, without modifying the end users’ habits and avoiding peak demands.

With this type of controller the consumer can schedule his appliances and in the most suitable moment, and under the premises given by the user, the controller will be able to start the cycle work of the appliances sequentially.

According to this technology, end user is able to modify his profile of consumption without important variations in his habits.

  8. What consequences does the bad use of energy bring?

An irresponsible energy use gives rise to an increase of energy needs and an unnecessary increase in the generation from the different power plants and directly related an increase of CO2 emissions to environment.

Consequently the bad use of energy brings to the end user an increase in his energy invoice.

  9. Are there in the market automatically managing devices for my household appliances?

Currently, GAD devices are not in the market, nevertheless appliances and devices with similar installed technology exist.

  10. When we get these devices?

GAD project is four years long (2007-2010) and during the last year a field testing for validation of the solutions is expected to carry out.

Once the test had finished and the results had been analyzed, the different GAD devices will be produced to introduce them in households.

  11. Do I decide actively on disconnection or not my household appliances in case I need use them?

GAD technology will not be imposed to the end user, but it will be a technology that will be installed in the houses under the user approval and subject to user’s conditions signed with the Retailer. GAD System assesses the supply with same quality and without any change in user’s habits.

  12. What will become really have an "efficient home energetically"?

The ultimate aim of this project and other ones with similar objectives focus on getting an efficient house that was beneficial for the network system and for end users. This aim will entail a better maintenance of the environment and will reduce the CO2 emissions.
